ALL profits go to the Downs Syndrome Association

Having been a member of the Association of Voluntary Guides to the city of York and a guide in the Minster for almost 40 years, Malcolm Walker has taken some of the best and juiciest parts of York’s history and compiled it into this book. Following a route around the city, the book takes us to different sites and explains parts of their history that have influenced both York and the rest of the world. Whether you’ve lived in York your whole life (as the author has), you’ve recently arrived, or you’re just visiting for the weekend, it will help you to understand much more of the city’s history: its sinners, its saints and those that fit neither title.

About Malcolm Walker and the book

All proceeds to the Downs Syndrome Association

I am quite unashamedly pushing the sale of this book – for as you can see the proceeds are going to a good cause.  I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t live in York so what interest is it to me?” Well, if instead of York I’d put “London” I don’t think there would have been the same reaction.  York has been a capital city more times than London: Roman, Saxon, Viking and in the Middle Ages second only after London in population. The characters in it are of national significance and some international. For example in the “Sinner” category what about Dick Turpin or Guy Fawkes – mind you there might be some disagreement about the latter being classed as a sinner. Who in this Island’s history has determined the course of Western Civilisation more than any other person? It was a Roman Emperor: Constantine who made Christianity the main and eventually the only religion of the Empire and where was he proclaimed Emperor? - In the H.Q. building of the 6th Legion, where York Minster now stands. Yet he had his eldest son and his second wife murdered. You can read about him also the Quakers of the City - of enormous significance in the form of two families: the “Tukes” - responsible for the first mental institution in the land to treat the mentally ill as human beings also the first school to educate girls to the same standard as boys.  The “Rowntrees – it was a book “Poverty” written by “Seebohm Rowntree “in 1900 (arguably the most influential social document of the twentieth century) that so influenced the Liberal Government of 1906 to instigate reforms that were to be the basis of the welfare state of today.  Without a medical man born in York – Dr John Snow we wouldn’t have known that our present problem was a “Virus” so would have been unable to find treatment or a vaccine; in a poll of doctors he was voted the greatest physician of all time. There are many more fascinating characters

– so  do yourself and the Association a favour and  buy it.
